Congratulations Alice!
Everyone meet Alice, she started working for the bakery in 1987 when she was just 16 years old! You may recognize her if you go into our Midtown store a lot, she's been managing that store since we moved there nearly 20 years ago!
Alice just celebrated her 25th anniversary with the bakery and on Tuesday you can celebrate too with a FREE slice of cake at our Midtown store there at 15th & Harvard! After 25 years at Merritt's she's the type of person that all of our regular customers know her by name and not just because she's a familiar face at the bakery, but because she takes pride in caring for each customer. On a day when the bakery isn't quite as busy you'll find her walking around the front of the bakery getting to know each and every one of you. Let's take a look at how her journey began and some fun stories along the way....
"Alice was just 8 years old when the bakery opened in 1979 when her mom would come in every day with a group of friends to sit down and enjoy donuts and coffee," Bobbie Merritt said. When she turned 16 she took a job at the bakery which at that time consisted of very few employees. Bobbie's younger brother Brett and dad Floyd helped out at the bakery and eventually they had one other counter girl. Alice was hired to wait on customers, but at that time she was petrified! "Bobbie had to drag me by the arm to wait on my first couple of customers," Alice said. Take a look at the picture below of her interacting with one of her regulars, it sure doesn't look like she's petrified anymore!
Things were different at the bakery 25 years ago. Larry Merritt and Alice were the ones who had to fold boxes every night for the next day. They would have races to see who could fold them faster, but Larry always won. I bet if you put the two of them at it again, Alice would win hands down! One of the things Bobbie's dad, Floyd helped with was dumping cake when it came out of the oven. Alice and Floyd's favorite was the Italian Cream cake right when it came out of the oven. "Every once in awhile you would find Floyd "accidentally" breaking one of the Italian Cream cakes so we could have our afternoon snack. Nothing is better still to this day than the Italian Cream cake especially when it's right out of the oven," said Alice.
It's funny how things have changed and grown over the years, now we're a bakery of over 80 employees, have 3 locations, plus a production facility. Alice has been there through it all and has really been a part of our family all along. It's been fun to watch Alice grow up in front of our very own eyes and now to see her with a family of her own. If you haven't met Alice yet, you will soon find out if you go into our Midtown store how fun, outgoing and positive she always is. She's a type of employee you never want to see go because she is always uplifting her employees around her and taking care of her number one priority, the customer. You ask Alice what her favorite product is in the whole bakery she would say a cupcake! "I do love the krinkle cookies, but nothing beats one of our cupcakes," says Alice.
In honor of Alice on Tuesday we will be giving away FREE slices of cake at our Midtown store right there at 15th & Harvard. Come in and tell her hi and congratulate her on a great 25 years and see just why she is so special to the Merritt family.
